Fun back-down week…

Great 5k-run today.

I was running a 5k race with my running buddies Y and S (well, S ran the 10k). My goal was to make this a tempo run and see how fast I can run a 5k. Though I was a tiny bit slower than I hoped for, I really enjoyed the shorter distance.

I haven’t run a 5k since 2008 and usually don’t feel like getting out of the house for it. Travel takes like 4x the race time… Therefore, only runs of 10k and longer usually get my attention.

I had to get out of my comfort zone at least some today. You see, with the long runs it usually takes me 3-4 miles to get into a rhythm. With a 5k of course you don’t have the luxury of waiting to get into a rhythm, so it’s GO right from the start! 🙂

My first mile was at my goal pace, the next 2 miles just a little bit slower. So, next run I’ll need to work on keeping up with goal pace. The next race will be a 10k. This will give me another great opportunity to test my speed.

  1. Nice job on hitting the shorter distances! I kind of know what you mean about feeling like they’re not worth it, but it’s amazing how different short runs are from long ones in terms of how fast you need to start! I’m just getting used to the longer runs, and it still feels like I’m starting soooooo slowly, but maintaining 10k pace for more than a 10k is brutal! 🙂

    • Agreed. You motivated me to run a shorter distance, so all my new short runs are on you. 😉 I am training now what I call “reverse miles”: start slower than goal pace and each mile get a bit faster…

  3. I can’t wait to say I’ve run a 5K… your posts inspire me to keep working towards that goal! I did walk home from a friends last night, 5.6 kms in 46 minutes… so I didn’t get a run in, but working towards that goal of end of June!

  4. Congratulations!! The only time I’m usually running is towards something I want (ie. A doughnut) or away from something I don’t want (ie. Scary neighbour boy with no eyebrows). You’re training is inspiring (Jill runs and is hoping to enter a race this summer) and we hope to hear all about the lead up to your April half marathon! Woot woot! …L
