The child on a rocking horse

The great thing about spending vacation time in the city you live in is that you actually get to see things you would otherwise miss. So during my Olympic vacation week, I got to see much more than just the Olympics.

I got to see the child on a rocking horse statue!

I hear you say, “What?”

Here is a piece of London history that I didn’t know. At Trafalgar Square, there are 4 plinths. 3 of them feature statues of men who won or lost battles for Britain. The fourth one has been empty for over 150 years. Since 1998, the fourth plinth showcases contemporary sculptures.

Currently, it shows the child on a rocking horse. The name of the sculpture is “Powerless Structure”.

The statue looks very much out of place in this historic square that remembers the Battle of Trafalgar. But the sentiment of this piece of art is quite powerful.

The statue celebrates the future, the hero yet to emerge. Its shiny color symbolizes the youth and the hope that lies within.

I am guessing that it is not just a coincidence that this sculpture finds its way to the public during the Olympics and Paralympics. The goal of the London 2012 Games is to inspire a generation. The child on the rocking horse fits this notion.

Sometimes art surprises me in its simplicity. It took me a while to really like this one, but now I do. Who really can argue with art that celebrates, hope, youth and our future?
