Paralympics Day 1 – records and inspiration

What an inspiring and also humbling day!

I had tickets for the Paralympics swimming this morning, one of the first Paralympics sports events.

It was such a fantastic experience. During the swimming heats this morning, 2 world records were smashed (one by British swimmer Jonathan Fox and the other by Chinese swimmer Dong Lu  – you can just imagine the noise and atmosphere in the Aquatic Centre!) and 4 Paralympics records were also broken. What a great day to be watching the swimming!

I was very happy to see that the Aquatic Centre was full. The athletes were amazing. I don’t think I can find adequate words to describe how I feel about the Paralympics. The determination of all athletes to not let their disability hinder them to go and achieve great things in life leaves me humbled. I hope I will always remember this moment and stop making excuses for not going for what I want out of life. Sandi’s post on Self Love today hits a note here.

Back to the event.

My seat was in the last but one row. I could see the pool perfectly. But I couldn’t see any of the spectators on the other side (so my comment on the Aquatic Centre being full is just a projection on my side having been full…).

It was a little high up… Luckily, I am not afraid of heights. But the view was actually great. I had great people around me shouting for their teams. I should have brought my flag (note to self: pack one for tomorrow!). It was many many many steps to get to my seat and I figured that was a good work-out for the day and hence skipped my gym today…

Records were celebrated:

Seeing 4 Paralympics records broken was already great. In fact, in the Women’s S6 100m backstroke British swimmer Nyree Kindred set a Paralympics record in the first heat, only to be broken later by the Chinese Dong Lu.

So, records were broken and re-broken! Seeing 2 World records was a fantastic bonus:

I couldn’t have picked a better event to start my Paralympics experience. I hope you all take some time to watch the Paralympics. These athletes are superhumans and they deserve our support.

I promise it’s well worth your time! 🙂

  1. Sounds like an awesome day! The coverage here in China is delayed, but I’m looking forward to seeing some of it!
